Story time is the best time of the day. Whether we're snuggled up on the couch or cozy in our pjs before bed, reading stories with my little ones is one of my favorite things to do. Everyone has a favorite book they remember from their childhood, and every day, parents and kids are discovering new classics of their own. There are many fabulous children's books out there, some of which everyone knows about and others we would have never discovered had my son not simply pulled a random book off a library shelf. I created this blog to share some of these wonderful stories with you. Think of it as a year's worth of the best children's books around, since no day should be without a great story. In the end, I hope we'll all have discovered at least a few new titles that will have made their way onto our list of family favorites. Enjoy!

Storytime Activities

There are so many exciting ways to extend learning (and fun!) beyond the pages of a book.  Here, you will find ideas for activities, crafts, and recipes that help bring some of our favorite stories to life.  Enjoy, and feel free to share links and ideas of your own!

My Heart is Like a Zoo!  Read this delightful story and then have fun creating your own creatures out of hearts.  This could be a perfect craft to do around Valentine's Day, too!

Leaf creations:  Read Leaf Man and be inspired to see what leaf creations you can make!  Around here, this is most easily done in fall, but you could certainly use some of nature's treasures from any time of year.

Bringing Stories to Life!  Looking for ways to act out some of your favorite stories?  Click here to see our post about some of our favorite ways to do this. Be sure to read the comments for some of our readers' suggestions, too!

Child Author at Play:  Reading stories is obviously wonderful, but writing our own is pretty fabulous, too!  See how we wrote our own animal alphabet book and "Don't Let the Pigeon..." story.

A Very Carle Breakfast:  I'm always looking for ways to make mealtime fun, and this was one breakfast we just couldn't resist!  We used watermelon, cantaloupe, blueberries, and apples, but you could use any kind of fruit that you have on hand.

Making Our Own Books:  Looking for a perfect gift idea for a loved one in your life?  How about having your child write his or her own picture book?  My son loved making his own book for Daddy this past Christmas, and I know it will be something that we keep and cherish for years to come.  Check out our post to see what we did!

Our Day at the Beach (rainy day style):  Check out this post for ideas on how to bring some of our favorite summertime books to life!  This was how we spent a damp February Friday, and these beachy activities really made the day fun.  We created ocean paintings on foil to go with one of our all-time favorite sing-alongs, Over In the Ocean, and made a Pout-Pout Fish in the Big-Big Dark-inspired glow-in-the-dark bath time adventure, among other things.  I really ought to do these kind of theme days more often!

Book Inspired Art:  See how one of my son's favorite books has inspired him to draw, draw, draw!

Animal Play Time!  Here are some fun games and activities inspired by our favorite books about animals.

Dinosaur Story Time Fun!  Check out some of our favorite books on dinosaurs and related dino activities.

Mommy and Me Book Club:  I found this fabulous blog the other day thanks to a post by Rainy Day Mum.  It is full of great ideas for activities, songs, and crafts to accompany some of our favorite books.  I can't wait to try some of these!!
